Fairy Bread is a traditional Aussie/Kiwi treat served at children's parties. It is usually made from triangles of white bread spread with butter or margarine and dusted with 100's and 1000's and other candy sprinkles.
Fairy Bread
One night I dreamed a little old Chinese shaman offered me fairy bread of a different sort, very light and fluffy and pretty, and the closer you looked the more fairies you could see dancing around on top of it. There were also tiny, intricately carved little candy dragons. When I awoke I decided to try my hand at making some different kinds of fairy bread, and this is what I came up with.

Come up here, O dusty feet!
Here is fairy bread to eat.
Here in my retiring room,
Children, you may dine
On the golden smell of broom
And the shade of pine;
And when you have eaten well,
Fairy stories hear and tell.
Fairy Girl's Fairy Bread

ingredients:
  • 1 or more flat puff pastry sheet(s)
  • vanilla bean dusting sugar
  • 100's and 1000's or other candy sprinkles
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • other fillings as explained below
Cut a flat pastry sheet into 6 cm squares
paint with egg and sprinkle with vanilla bean dusting sugar
sprinkle with 100's and 1000's, then roll from the corner into
a little roll with sprinkles on the inside
paint with egg again on top and add more candy spinkles
place on cookie sheet covered with baking paper and
cook at 180C. for about 12 minutes
Sprinkle with dusting sugar when done.

mmmmmmmm! Also try coating the insides with golden syrup, and putting a little ground ginger paste inside with brown sugar sprinkles on top. Another good variation is using hazelnut butter with cocoa. Lots of possibilities!
